Physical Description: A solid 6'4", Rodolphus is wide-shouldered and straight-backed, a man in his 40s with dark hair and eyes. His expression is habitually stoic and serious, lending to his overall creepily calm demeanor. He tends to dress conservatively and in dark colors; his clothing ranges from something distinctly Victorian in style to more modern cut suits, but almost always with a robe of some sort over it. His left forearm bears a distinctive scar that looks roughly like this. Should Voldemort ever arrive in Baedel, it will rekindle itself into a fullblown magical tattoo, complete with hurtings and pains. :C He also has a scar on his chest from where Bellatrix accidentally almost killed him once when they were practicing dueling (that's how much better she is, basically).
Sexuality: Rodolphus is straight, a one on the Kinsey scale, and while he's not a very sexual person, he does like the ladies. He just doesn't... do anything about it. Ever. It's not so much repression as it is a difficulty expressing himself. Also, he's way super serious about everything, so he never really dated, he just. Stared at girls he liked, and sulked for ages whenever he got shot down. While it is difficult to reach him, those that do, he cares deeply about; his passion for others tends to be rather one-sided, however, and also a little creepy. He's not a voyeur and he doesn't creep at windows, but his intensity is laughably romance novel love interest smouldering forever type, only that's not actually sexy in real life, it's just. Worrying. However, he is a gentleman by habit if not necessarily by nature. He would never harm someone because they didn't return his interest (that would be MOST PEOPLE, after all), or try to force them to do so. He'd just brood. Bellatrix is the love of his life and he is loyal to her while recognizing that she probably doesn't care if he is or not, and also remaining mostly apathetic toward any romantic ventures on her part (LOL BUT REALLY, IT'S VOLDEMORT, WHAT'S HE GONNA DO).
History: The Harry Potter universe is one of magic. Magical plot holes. Magical plot holes for megalodons. That said, there's nothing terribly outlandish about Rodolphus' role in it. He was born the oldest son of two to an old pureblooded wizarding family, the Lestranges. His brother Rabastan was born born a year or two after him. They both attended Hogwarts, where they were sorted into Slytherin. He, along with his wife Bellatrix (née Black), were among Voldemort's strongest supporters during the first wizarding war. Here is a quote from Sirius Black describing the war:
"Imagine that Voldemort's powerful now. You don't know who his supporters are, you don't know who's working for him and who isn't; you know he can control people so that they do terrible things without being able to stop themselves. You're scared for yourself, and your family, and your friends. Every week, news comes of more deaths, more disappearances, more torturing … The Ministry of Magic's in disarray, they don't know what to do, they're trying to keep everything hidden from the Muggles, but meanwhile, Muggles are dying too. Terror everywhere … panic … confusion … that's how it used to be."
Voldemort's bloody campaign against non-magical people was coincident with his grab for power. He was supported by the Death Eaters, who killed, tortured, and magically controlled people to further his cause. They were opposed by the Ministry and the Order of the Phoenix. After Voldemort's fall during his attack on the Potters, Rodolphus, his brother, Barty Crouch Jr., and Bellatrix continued searching for him. Believing that Frank and Alice Longbottom possessed some information about his whereabouts, as they were Aurors and Order members, they tortured the couple to the point of insanity. They were caught and put on trial, and sentenced to lifetime imprisonment at Azkaban (Harry views the trial through Dumbledore's pensieve, and notes that Rodolphus has no real reaction to being sentenced, that he only stares blankly). In 1995, Voldemort finally returned, beginning the second wizarding war. In 1996, Rodolphus and his family escaped Azkaban during the Dementor revolt. Summarizing the events of the ensuing books would be approximately the biggest pain in the butt so I'm not gonna do it unless you ~MAKE ME~, but Rodophus was present during the Ministry raid in the Order of the Phoenix, when Bellatrix killed Sirius (after which he was captured while Bellatrix escaped), as well as the Battle over Little Whinging (Tonks injured him during pursuit) and the Battle of Hogwarts. This last battle is presumption only, but it makes sense for him to have been there. It is difficult to say for certain because JKR tends to focus entirely on Bellatrix and hardly mentions Rodolphus at all. In my mind, however, he has always been very patiently present during any major event at which Bellatrix was present with other Death Eaters. He was also there when Molly Weasley killed her, but he was not listed among the dead, so it is reasonable to assume he was recaptured.
Powers: ~Magic.~ The magic of the Harry Potter universe is not extensively explained and there are a metric asston of holes to fill in, but I follow some general rules inferred from what's canon. For example, speaking when casting a spell is often helpful, even for adult wizards, but it is not necessary. A wand is necessary for wizards raised in a European/Western culture, but wandless magic is also possible — a wand is a focus, just like saying the words are.

A list of spells can be found here, but this is by no means comprehensive.

Rodolphus is not as good as Bellatrix; in fact, he is quite average as far as dueling goes (and being 6'4", he presents a rather large target). His strengths lie in other, more scholarly areas, such as ancient runes and arithmancy. He is not brilliant, but he is intelligent and good with complex spells that require a lot of preparation.
Personality: Beginning at the beginning entails, for Rodolphus, mentioning that his mother went through a difficult pregnancy but an easy birth — he was the much heralded first child, the oldest son, and the Lestrange family was fiercely protective and proud of him from an early age, instilling his already serious nature with a strong sense of duty and filial pride. To him, it's not a joke: he really buys into this snotty pureblood shit, though the attitude is perhaps more traditionally English than just a wizarding cultural thing. Then again, very little is a joke to Rodolphus, despite being born with a name like that. There are three basic natures that all babies have: good natured, fussy, or slow to warm up. Rodolphus was and remains the last category. From an early age, he had a very sober demeanor. It isn't that he doesn't have a sense of humor, but rather that he rarely shows it, and rarely in conventional ways. His dignity isn't actually important to him, however. It's just something he naturally exudes. It's not something he had to learn and develop, and he doesn't guard it fiercely. It's just how he is.

This also made him a quiet and reserved child, traits he retains as an adult of forty-seven years. He is not shy, and certainly not retiring; rather, he is disinclined to talk unless necessary (polite conversation is sometimes necessary, so he will do that too), and more prone to standing there and observing people, keeping his thoughts to himself. This has earned him a reputation for being boring and the least fun ever, both of which are, well, MOSTLY TRUE. He's simply not a social creature, though he can and will jump through the usual polite society hoops. It's rare for him to be witty, even if what he says usually exhibits intelligence. Though he's a dour individual, he doesn't think of more social people as shallow or annoying. He does recognize that he is not quite normal in this respect, and respects those who can talk circles around others, as it is a talent, albeit not always a useful one. Rodolphus just knows better than to try and compete. Because of that, he also comes off as passionless, maybe even dead — nothing could be farther from the truth, however.

He burns cold, as the saying goes. There is a profound intensity to most things he does, as he takes life pretty seriously. He is an extremely determined person, patient and willing to use whatever means necessary to accomplish his goals. And he is not without sentimentality. The people he cares for the most, besides family, are those that are his opposites. He feels very strongly for people who are openly passionate, who live life to the fullest, even if (perhaps particularly if) they may not be as careful or thoughtful as he is. This is the basis of his attraction to Bellatrix, whose fanatical devotion to Voldemort and the pureblooded cause strike him as beautiful, even inspiring, in its own way. To her, and to those he calls friends, he is extremely loyal and very dependable. He will always have their backs, and is always watching out for those he considers his. For example, he is very close to his younger brother Rabastan, and considers protecting him (though he does respect his brother's ability to protect himself) almost as high a priority as protecting Bellatrix (though again, he recognizes she doesn't exactly need protection).

With the exception of Bellatrix and a few others, he is a dominant personality, very patriarchal and traditional. But he is also a little like a stately lion who lets cubs bounce off him and bite him and hang from his mane. He is not quite a "type a" personality, as he tends to be, if not exactly easy-going, very calm, but he is a bit of an alpha male. He defers to other men sparingly (it's sexist, but he doesn't mind deferring to women because it's what a ~gentleman~ does), though when he does, as is the case with Voldemort, he does so wholeheartedly and without reserve. Following orders isn't a problem, as long as they make sense to him.

Notably, however, "as long as they make sense to him" is the only real criteria. There is very little he won't do to a person, though not out of sadism. He doesn't revel in power over others, but simply assumes it is a natural state of being and is most secure when that is the case. In his view, the world is a terrible place, terrible things sometimes have to be done, and he is often the terrible man to do them. It does not bother him much. He's not a sociopath — he is not charming, he does not have a grandiose sense of self-worth, he does not need special stimulation, he is not a pathological liar, he does not live a parasitic lifestyle, have poor behavioral control, or exhibit promiscuous sexual behavior, etc. etc. — the only sociopathic traits he has are manipulativeness, lack of remorse/guilt, and callousness. He simply lacks a basic human empathy, even if he is still attached to certain kinds of people (recognizing in them what he himself doesn't have). He does have a wide range of emotion, he just doesn't show it ever — not because he represses it but because of his natural reserve. It's probably not obvious to anybody but Bellatrix (and Rabastan) how strongly he feels for her, to the point where he is incredibly permissive and rarely even cares that Bellatrix 1) has no real romantic feelings for him and 2) is pretty much obsessed with Voldemort and would do (anything for) him. Bellatrix does genuinely dominate him in terms of personality, but there is also this permissiveness as a factor. He doesn't just roll over for anyone. He is far more likely to roll you over. Into a woodchipper. For safe-keeping.
Object: his wife's wand (in addition to his own)
Reason for playing: Basically Rodolphus is the most inadvertently creepy character I have and I derive great entertainment from this. He is different. While sort of co-dependent on Bellatrix, he also does okay by himself, just sort of looming around and brooding and generally being an awful, unprincipled person.
Gods: Gediron might approve of Rodolphus' basic nature (diligence, loyalty, ambition) and there is a certain patriarchal similarity between them. Also, disloyal wives! Rodolphus totally gets you, bro. :[

First-Person Network Post: [The man speaking sounds distant and entirely neutral, very collected. It's clear he's thought about what he would say, and there's no deviation from the plan.]

I require a leather holster custom made. Its plans and measurements will be provided. I am willing to discuss different forms of payment.
First-Person Journal Post: You would be displeased with this world I have found myself in. There is no cause to which I can rally but that of my own survival, something which seems a lukewarm enterprise at best. Everybody crawls in crowds, huddled and helpless before the essential brutishness of this city, all awash in a mercurial sort of magic that threatens to wrest control from my wand. Should I have better luck with yours...? I will keep it with me.

Or maybe it's that I no longer sufficiently care to control myself, in your absence.

Third-Person Arrival Post: The room is a room like any other, and that is probably the most disorienting part. He's no longer restrained — his wand is in his hand, even — and there is another upon the table, along with some pamphlets. The second wand fixes his attention, though. It's familiar, and though he himself has never held it, when he brushes his fingertips against its glossy side, he knows it's hers. More significantly, he knows instinctively what it means that it's here with him in this sudden, alien room. This is the only piece of her he will ever see again.

However long he stood there, at length he stirs and takes up the pamphlet. It is difficult to say whether he feels any more numb than he has for the past fourteen years, or indeed, much of his life in many respects. (Flashes of childhood, of his time as a student, Bellatrix's polite smile that hardly lasted long enough for courtesy, but he never loved her smile...) What he reads is not unthinkable. There are other worlds, he has known this. Yet somehow the truth is muted as long as he is in this quiet room, and he finds himself reluctant to go to the door and see for himself. It will be the beginning of something new, and for a moment, though he is not old for a wizard, he feels tired, hollow and lined with clammy ashes that simply won't be substantive enough for his survival.

The moment passes. He will do as he must, as he always has. Picking up Bellatrix's wand, he slips it into his sleeve for safekeeping, then regards the door a second longer. It's time.
Third-Person Action Post: He brushes the hair out of her eyes, but she isn't seeing him, not even when he gives her a little shake. Alice Longbottom has nothing to give them anymore, if she had in the first place — something he had doubted from the start, but there were so few leads as to what had happened to their Lord that it had been impossible to dissuade Bellatrix and Barty, not that he'd really tried.

Alice sobs, turning her face aimlessly against his hand and smearing blood and tears against the leather. Beyond her, Bellatrix looms dark and furious, eyes wide and gleaming. Not all Death Eaters operate as they do when it comes to interrogation; some prefer to keep their distance, using magic only, some incorporate more physical measures, and some take more satisfaction in their work than others. Their Lord had known who was squeamish and who was not. The Lestranges are renowned even among the inner circle as some of the most loyal, the most effective.

"Make her speak," Bellatrix demands, knuckles white around her wand.

"We'll get nothing of use from her," he says in his empty way, releasing Alice to huddle upon the floor. This only serves to further frustrate Bellatrix, as he knew it would, but he is accustomed to such things.

"We must be sure!"

At such a close range, the scent of ozone crackles to his nostrils as his wife inflicts another Cruciatus curse upon the Longbottom woman, but Rodolphus doesn't startle, only slowly stands away. Alice's teeth are bloody, her mouth stretched in silent agony. He watches her twist, muscles straining and standing out as the magic courses through her body. He watches Bellatrix's poorly veiled desperation, the way she hardly blinks, the way she herself fights for breath. This is pointless, but it is nothing he would deny her. They are in no danger of being caught at the moment, so he is content to wait for her to be done and for her rage to be exhausted.

However long it takes.
